Our Business

Shah Gas Development (SGD) is a large-scale green field gas project located 210 km south west of the city of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and its Industrial partner Occidental Petroleum Corporation (Oxy) developed the Shah Gas Field under formed, Abu Dhabi Gas Development Company Ltd. (Al Hosn Gas). The SGD project is part of a critical infrastructure strategic program for UAE to meet future gas demand.
The Shah Gas project is considered the biggest of its kind in the world. Although this sour gas field was discovered in the mid-1960s, its remoteness and the complexity of gas extraction made development virtually impossible. Only in recent years has technology advanced to an extent that makes processing such sour gas feasible. The very high H2S and CO2 content of the gas (about 23.5% H2S and 10% CO) is significantly sourer than current gas produced in Abu Dhabi and posed unique technical challenges. Success in this project placed Abu Dhabi Gas Development Company Ltd. (Al Hosn Gas) on the leading edge of heavy Sour gas Processing.

Once the Gas processing Plant was operational, its Capacity had recieved 1,000 million standard cubic feet of sour gas per day and processed into:

  • 4,400 metric tons of natural gas liquids per day
  • 33,000 barrels of petroleum condensates per day
  • 10,000 metric tons of pure sulphur per day
  • 500 million cubic feet of sales gas per day
The SGD Project consists of onshore wells and production systems, gathering and transfer pipelines, processing plant, product pipelines and Sulphur Granulation facility.
The plant is the largest facility of this kind and was designed to be self-supporting and includes housing, medical, recreation and a mosque to provide a high quality of life for permanent staff accommodation. The design life for the main plant, gas gathering system and pipelines is expected to be more than 30 years.
